About Practical Masonry
Practical Masonry is led by stonemason Joe Symes, who qualified over twenty years ago in Advanced Stone Masonry from Bath College. He has worked continuously in the industry since, developing a particular focus on complex architectural masonry and carving for historic and ecclesiastical buildings.
Joe spent eight years working in London, including projects at Westminster Abbey, Banqueting House and Leeds Castle, alongside a wide range of conservation and restoration work. During this time, he worked with numerous specialist conservation companies, supplying accurately detailed architectural stonework and carving for sensitive historic buildings.
Now based in Somerset, Joe continues to grow Practical Masonry, delivering high‑quality stone masonry for the restoration and conservation industry as well as private clients across the South West and further afield.
Practical Masonry operates as a small team of experienced masons and carvers, bringing together decades of combined experience.
The work is driven by a shared commitment to traditional craftsmanship, accuracy and precision.
